IT@Cork Java Conference Part I: OSGi and Spring

There might be a downturn in the construction industry in these parts right now, but there is one company of plumbers that is still working flat out. SpringSource, the company behind the Spring Framework, has always plumbed the nastier parts of APIs and Frameworks where nobody likes to go, in order to make them more hygenic to use. They are still doing this and more besides, and two of their number came to IT@Cork’s 3rd annual Java Conference to keep us up to date with their activities. Ben Hale and Jonas Partner from SpringSource gave interesting presentations on OSGi and Spring Integration respectively. I’ll try to give a summary of Ben’s presentation in this post. I’ll catch up with Jonas and the other speakers in later posts.

It’s Java Time Again in Cork

IT@Cork have upped the stakes.

Over the past few years the half-day Java conferences have proved to be very successful, attracting people from all over Munster and beyond. This year the event has switched to a full-day format, based on feedback from previous years. The line-up looks as exciting and relevent as ever and I look forward to my yearly fix of Java news, trends and in-depth technical content.

For those who have not already registered, check out the IT@Cork site here for details on speakers. The event takes place next Tuesday the 9th of September in the Radisson SAS in Little Island.

R&D, Innovation and Technical Progress at DSI

There can be little doubt but that there is increased emphasis placed on Ireland as a knowledge economy. We have a well-established array of research funding agencies , whose aim is to promote the area of R&D within Ireland, by focusing on industry R&D and by linking industry and academia. This is all done to improve the long-term viability and sustainability of the Irish economy. But what can individual firms achieve on their own? What R&D are they doing? And, significantly, who is benefiting from this focus? DSI as an organisation is certainly contributing to this work, much time and effort is devoted to R&D activities. Let us examine this work, and ultimately see who is benefiting from this.

The open source community has long since emerged as a leading example of cooperation and collaboration within the wider software development community.   DSI’s long standing commitment to supporting open source software is demonstrated by having a policy for preferential adoption of OSS tools and applications where possible, and by actively contributing to other OSS initiatives. Earlier this year DSI announced that it was invited to contribute to the open source framework Spring .NET. This follows on from DSI’s adoption of Spring as the framework of choice for DSI’s Java application development. Recently DSI released it’s own OS DBPro Bridge application. This is of interest to developers using Visual Studio who are required to work in conjunction with a DBA using DBPro. This is designed as an open source download, users can use it as a plug-in to their own software development projects.

Calling all Cork-based Software Companies

For the last few months, as part of a combined initiative from Steps to Engineering and ICT Ireland’s ICT Champions Programme, I’ve been visiting a small number of secondary schools around Cork, describing to Transition Year students what it’s like to work as a software engineer.

Having heard about dwindling numbers of students in 3rd level science and engineering courses, and having read about the current societal trend of devaluing the importance of scientic thinking, I expected the worst. I was concerned that my audience would be totally uninterested in what I had to say. I was pleasantly surprised.

I was listened to attentively and many questions were posed after each talk. A number of TY students have approached me looking for a work experience placement in DSI, and while we have been able to say yes to many, there are still a number of good, keen students out there still looking for a place. If you think your company could help out in this matter, please contact me here (blawlor at decaresystems.ie) or add a comment to this blog entry.

Remember that it is in our own best interests as an industry to encourage students with an interest in IT. We’ll be depending on their skills and enthusiasm over the coming years.

Thanks in advance.
